COWARDICE is an unforgiveable trait, especially in men and
sadly I've seen too many of the so-called stronger sex displaying the backbone
of the common garden worm.
Therefore, whatever you thought of Saddam Hussein, you've got to hand it to him
... his behaviour at the gallows was nothing short of impeccable.
I reckon if George W Bush or Tony Blair had been facing that noose we would have
seen torrents of tears, and much hand-wringing on bended knees while begging for
mercy between sobs.
But when America and Britain's old friend stared death in the face he did it
with a calmness and dignity you would only expect from a Hollywood script.
He even refused to wear a mask ... unlike his executioners who didn't have the
bottle to do the job without hiding their faces beneath ink black hoods.
The masked executioners even goaded and tormented the former Iraqi leader in his
final minutes but Saddam gave as good as he got. He even remembered Palestine -
Allahu Akbar!
This display of iron will confused the critics and earned him begrudging respect
from others.
Once again the Bush Administration and the marionettes who claim to run Iraq
scored on own goal by executing Saddam.
The sad ghouls even filmed the macabre event in the vain hope Saddam would crack
and beg for mercy or show remorse during his final minutes - he did neither to
his credit and their shame.
Let's face it - his trial was a farce and his execution was murder.
Please do not think for one nano second I admired Saddam. The man was a CIA
creation, a friend of the West who was armed in the 80s by Britain and America.
I do hope America's friends take note of Saddam's demise ... from friend to foe
to hanged man. When the rope was put around his neck I bet quite a few Arab
leaders felt a slow, choking feeling - oh, and let's not forget the governor of
the 51st state of America President Pervez Musharraf.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if they all suddenly got a dose of Saddam's courage and
told America to take a running jump? Sadly, I believe they will continue to
wriggle like worms on a hook before their American masters in the hope that it's
not their turn next.
And ordinary folk like you and me will continue to cringe at the craven
behaviour of these spineless leaders.
In truth I expected the former Iraqi leader to peel off this mortal coil with
dignity but there are a few outstanding matters which still need to be
addressed.
Firstly, his conviction and execution can never be considered lawful, not when
the court system was set up by American occupiers, based on US law.
And just what gives America the right to invade a sovereign nation placing its
leader on trial for war crimes based on US law and then kill him?
Secondly just who chose the date of his execution - it was Eid Day.
Does George W Bush hate Muslims so much he had to sully one of the most glorious
days in the Islamic Calendar? Well, yes, this is the man who declared war on
Islam using provocative words like 'crusade'.
But let's not forget the so-called Iraqi Government - a bunch of men who will
run faster than Ben Johnson on crack cocaine to catch that last helicopter as it
flies from the roof of the US Embassy in Baghdad (not that far-fetched - think
Vietnam).
This disgusting band of hypocrites could have at least insisted that his
execution be delayed until after the Eid holidays. Either they were too scared
to say 'no' to America or they wanted to kick sand in the face of every devout
Muslim.
As I write this, I am performing hajj and have spent the day in Mina watching
nearly four million Muslims go through the symbolic stoning of the devil.
The day before I walked around the tent city in Mina talking to brothers and
sisters who were in tears, venting their anger that Saddam could be executed on
the morning of Eid. None declared any great love for Saddam but they do have a
passion for their religion and fear it has been damaged by the events of
December 30.
This is a serious own goal by the Americans and their Iraqi collaborators ...
they have done to Saddam in death what he never achieved in life. He now has
hero status and there are those who are calling him a martyr. Quote this article on your site | Print | E-mail
